A family holiday in the country – just what is needed to solve family problems and to build understanding between father and daughter, and between father and his young female partner. However, the new setting only worsens the alienation that already exists between the characters. Father and his partner quarrel, and daughter feels unwanted, gradually withdrawing into her own imaginary world. She carries on a friendship with a local boy which initially she thinks will ease her loneliness. However, when a rifle falls into his hands the friendship becomes more dangerous than she anticipated…
